We got off at a deserted station near a town called Lithahuru. At this stage Seth seemed determined to get the trek over with. Our route was a clearly defined trail to follow the river upstream. Camping is strictly forbidden in the park. But no one told us. Our objective that day was the mountain refuge. Late in the day the sun began to take its toll. We were both hot, hungry and tired. 1,550m We should just jog from there then. I wasn't suffering any altitude issues this time but it was still hard going, at least for me. Another summit objective in the clouds. Master your meal has been served. It's around 8 o'clock. Potentially our last day together if all goes well. Seth was determined to summit, grab his Rail Pass, dumpe me and Lithahuru, and head back to mainland Europe on his own. We were entering a strange land that was once the home of the gods. It was a fitting place for our final test. The challenge of the 3 summits had grown as we progress through the summer. He could sense the door to his freedom as we got closer to the summit. What had started out as a silly idea many months ago had evolved into a concept and then into a challenge. Over the summer it had caused us to compete, argue, pull apart and ultimately grow closer. It had also taught me to respect Seth's strength and determination and it had shown him that he could beat his father. He was stronger at long last. If we summited he would pass his final initiation test. He would transition from childhood to manhood. One false step could lead to disaster. One last rise and success at last. 5 weeks and three summits later Seth had accomplished his personal objectives. Clearly he had surpassed his father physically.
