Caiman lizards are named so because they have large, thick scales that resemble the scales found on caimans. These two reptiles, however, aren't closely related - they just have similar common names. Caiman lizards are found throughout the Amazon River Basin down in to Paraguay where the Paraguay caiman lizard ranges. These large lizards spend a large portion of their lives in water as they are semi-aquatic animals. In fact, caiman lizards will bask in tree branches overhanging water ways so that if they are attacked by predators they can make a quick getaway!
Scientific Name:
- Dracaena guianensis (northern caiman lizard)
- Dracaena paraguayensis (Paraguay caiman lizard)
Range: Amazon River Basin down into Paraguay
Size: 4 feet (122cm) at maximum size weighing up to 10 pounds (4.5kg)
Diet: invertebrates like snails, crustaceans, and mollusks but may also take turtles, rodents, and fish
Lifespan: 10 years
