German automotive giant Volkswagen has revealed the all-new sixth-generation Polo hatchback in Berlin.Volkswagen has revealed a new Polo GTI alongside the rest of the 6th generation Polo range, the brand’s crucial new supermini that will battle the recently refreshed Ford Fiesta and SEAT Ibiza. But where SEAT has already confirmed that it will not be building a new Ibiza Cupra, Volkswagen has not wasted any time getting together its new Polo GTI. Hiding a new, larger 2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine under its conservative new skin, the Polo GTI produces 197bhp that is sent to the front wheels via either a 6-speed manual gearbox or 7-speed DSG. This represents a subtle 8bhp gain over the previous model, but thanks to the larger engine will probably also represent a jump in torque, although VW has yet to confirm exact figures. Visually the new Polo shares the same conservative new styling themes as the regular Polo, but raises the visual appeal with a usual combination of GTI specific design flourishes. At the front, a honeycomb mesh grill appears alongside a red trim stripe that also bleeds into the headlights on models equipped with the optional LED headlights. A subtle black under-body skirt loops its way from the front bumper, around the sides towards the rear bumper where there are a set of twin GTI specific tail pipes. These body modifications are set off with 17-inch or optional 18-inch alloy wheels and the usual GTI badging. Building on the standard Polo’s redesigned interior, the GTI features tartan seats, a golf ball gear knob and chunky flat-bottomed steering wheel, while an 8-inch infotainment system and a new version of Volkswagen’s Active Information Display are both optional. Ultimately though, the Polo sticks to the usual norms of a GTI setup, which is to say that it is not likely to be a track weapon by any means. Volkswagen has not made any mention of a Golf GTI Performance Pack style limited slip differential, although the Polo GTI does utilise a specific suspension set up with optional adaptive dampers. With a new Ford Fiesta ST on the horizon the GTI will have some pretty serious competition on its hands, but we will have to wait till later in the year to distinguish who will hold the future supermini hot hatch crown.
