CrapCook's video: Gerry Mulligan live in Paris

@Gerry Mulligan live in Paris
Why this album was released under the execrable title 'The Fabulous Gerry Mulligan Quartet' is a mystery, given that it's entirely made up of live performances at Selle Pleyel, Paris, on 1 & 4 June 1954. And what performances! The tracklist: I may be wrong Five Brothers Gold rush Lullaby of the leaves Makin' whoopee Laura Soft shoes The nearness of you The line up: Gerry Mulligan - Baritone Sax Bob Brookmeyer - Trombone Red Mitchell - Bass Frank Isola - Drums To quote from the (uncommonly well-written & informative) sleeve notes: "The fact that the quartet had no pianist was still something of a novelty. So was the understatement which seemed integral to the group's playing. And during the previous year the quartet's records had made the sound and style familiar to jazz afficionados on both sides of the Atlantic. All of which helps explain why the 3,000 people in the Salle Pleyel on the nights of June 1 & 4 found the music so absorbing; so much so that this Paris audience abandoned its traditional practice of approving only of black jazzmen, acknowledging that good jazz could be played by white musicians too - even if they did not happen to be French."
