Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida, 2011 Cristian Fernandez, 12, being interrogated by a detective following the assault of his little brother who later died from his injuries. Biannela Susana, 24, gave birth to Cristian Fernandez when she was only 12 yearls old herself. Cristian's 20-year-old father received only 10 years probation for having sex with a minor in exchange for vowing to be in his sons life, but his father eventually broke his vow and completely disappeared from Cristian's life. Cristian had a very poisonous upbringing littered with abuse. By the age of 12, Cristian suffered neglect by the hands of his mother and drug-abusing grandmother. Cristian was also sexually abused by a cousin and physically assaulted by his stepfather, who went on to kill himself from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after an assault on Cristian that caused him to be hospitalized. Cristian, as well as his siblings, witnessed his suicide. Growing up it is reported that Cristian had killed a kitten, simulated sex with classmates, and masturbated at school. Cristian also allegedly sexually assaulted his 5-year-old half brother. In January 2011, Cristian broke the leg of his youngest 2-year-old-brother, David Galarraga. Just weeks later, while his brother was still in a cast from his broken leg, Cristian bashed his head on a bookshelf numerous times, causing a fractured skull, bruising to his left eye and a bleeding brain. Cristian's mother, Biannela Susana, was not at home at the time of these fatal injuries. When Biannela became aware of her bloody unconscious 2-year-old son, she didn't bring him to the hospital. Biannela instead searched on the internet ways to remedy the situation, using search terms such as "coma" and "concussion". Biannela put ice on David's face in hopes of waking him up, but that did not work. According to numerous sources, while David was unconscious, she also casually surfed the internet, checking her email and gossip websites, did online banking, watched YouTube videos and downloaded music. Several hours later when David did not wake up, she finally called 911. David Galarraga was brought to the hospital, but died shortly after. His official cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head. Cristian Fernandez pleaded guilty to manslaughter and aggravated battery and was sentenced to 7 years in a juvenile detention center, which he served and is currently waiting to be released with an 8 year probation period. Biannela Susana pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter and a judge sentenced her to 10 years in prison, but he credited her with the two years, four months she’s already served in jail awaiting the consequences and suspended the rest of the sentence to probation.
