Fort McMurray's 80,000 residents were forced to leave Tuesday evening as the fire quickly spread, putting homes, schools and businesses in danger, according to The Globe and Mail. A few homes in Beacon Hill and Centennial Trailer Park have been reached by the flames and have caught fire. The fire nearly doubled in size overnight Monday, growing from 3,175 acres to 6,424 acres, with dry conditions enabling the fire to increase in size. The temperature reached 90 degrees at Fort McMurray on Tuesday with a very low relative humidity and gusty Southwest winds, said weather.com meteorologist Tom Moore. The average high temperature for this location is in the upper 50s for early May. The main wildfire burning west of Fort McMurray sparked a second, smaller fire after it jumped the Athabasca River. Another 10 firefighters were sent in an attempt to diminish the second blaze. Helicopters were being used to douse the flames but have since stopped with the fire coming so close to the city, according to the Edmonton Journal. The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo asked that those who were evacuated head to MacDonald Island Park, where an evacuee reception is set up, Global News reports.
