How to structure your employee compensation can be a tough job to tackle. There's several basic ways farmers address paying people. 1. "Free/low cost labor" via interns/apprentices. 2. Hourly paid employees. 3. Salary based. 4. Hybrid model . Salary base with opportunities/incentives. We've tried all four on our farm and I go into why we have moved to only using one. Daily Briefing is a five to 15 minute musing on a specific topic to generate conversations in the agricultural community. I (Jordan) and my wife, Laura, own and operate J & L Green Farm in Virginia. It has been our full time occupation for the last 10 years building this first generation, pasture based, (insert your favorite word), direct to retail farm. We are in the small percentage of farmers that actually make their income from farming. As such we address our farm as a business and make decisions with that in mind.
