Mortal Kombat was originally intended to be a game based on the movie Bloodsport, but the deal to acquire the license fell through. 2. Coming up with the name "Mortal Kombat" took 6 months. Names that didn’t make the cut included “Kumite” “Dragon Attack” “Death Blow,” and “Fatality.” 3. Jax was originally meant to be included in the original Mortal Kombat, but Ed Boon felt that the game was lacking a female personality and Jax was replaced by Sonja. 4. A popular myth that surfaced in printed media during the era of Mortal Kombat II was a Fatality that was so secret and hard to perform, that few ever saw it live. The Fatality would not only destroy the opponent, but do so having morphed into a rabid animal. The developers caught word and actually developed the “Animality”. 5. In 1993’s Mortal Kombat II, if two players played 250 consecutive matches in a single session they would unlock a game of Pong between round one and two. 6. Mortal Kombat was the first game to implement juggling. John Tobias admitted that it this was an accident that led to a Mortal Kombat innovation. 7. Sub-Zero, Scorpion, and Reptile featured the same character model that was coloured red. A technique known as palette swapping would then be used to give them their respective colours. 8. After playing for several hours with Sub-Zero, Scorpion, or Reptile a glitch would occur reverting the colour back to red with an error message "ErMac". This stood for Error Macro, however this didn't stop hoards of fans thinking that it was a secret character. This prompted the developers to great Ermac in future instalments. 9. The Mortal Kombat franchise was almost solely responsible for the formation of the Entertainment Software Rating Board, ESRB, in the video game industry. 10.
