Polonia, 1945. Mathilde, un giovane medico francese della Croce Rossa, è in missione per assistere i sopravvissuti della Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Quando una suora arriva da lei in cerca di aiuto, Mathilde viene portata in un convento, dove alcune sorelle incinte, vittime della barbarie dei soldati sovietici, vengono tenute nascoste. Nell’incapacità di conciliare fede e gravidanza le suore si rivolgono a Mathilde, che diventa la loro unica speranza.
