Gàidhlig Gu Leòr - Camanachd's video: The Colours in Scottish Gaelic - A deep dive in to na dathan

@The Colours in Scottish Gaelic - A deep dive in to na dathan!
Colours in Gaelic aren't just translations of the English ones, and there's lots of subtleties, hopefully we cover most of them in this vid. Colours in Gaelic aren't a straight swap out for your same colours in English - there are lots more subtleties and complexities, it's a great way to think of how different languages really are different ways of viewing the world, not just a code. It's worth thinking of two colour families Uaine-Gorm - Green - Blue Uaine - Green (used for plants and scenery) Gorm - Blue (your standard royal blue, but can also be applied to the colour of the grass) Glas - Grey (but can also be used for greenery) Liath - Light Blue (many languages differentiate between blue and light blue as different colours, liath can also mean light grey, and this is used when talking about grey hair.) Airgead - Silver (but really just means the metal) Airgeadach can be silvery Dubh-ghorm - Dark Blue Dubh - Black Geal - White Bàn - fair, blonde for hair, can also mean blank or an absence of colour, can be used ot lighten other colours Fionn - a fairly archaic word meaning fair or white, can be seen in names like Fionnlagh or Fionnghal Bàn takes us to the Dearg-Buidhe Spectrum Dearg - Red (as in bright red, colour of blood/fire engine) Bàn-dhearg or Pinc - Pink Ruadh - Red (in nature, ruddy, used for red hair colour, Rob Ruadh, Rob Roy) Ruadh-donn - Maroon (reddish brown) Donn - brown Odhar - Sallow, ochre Orains, - Orange, which was originally Òraiste which comes from Òr - Gold Òr-bhuidhe - Golden Yellow Buidhe - yellow Corcair - Scarlet Purpaidh - Purple Purpair - Indigo And I think that's it. If i missed any let me know. It mostly comes donw to context, a littel about dialect (some dialects prefer liath instead of gorm, some prefer liath instead of glas), it's just more fascinating than confusing if you go with it.
