In just three days the first phase of all eligible personnel at Fort Huachuca who wanted to receive the Moderna vaccine got their shot. The Army cannot reveal how many individuals were inoculated, but the people who fell under Phase 1 at the installation included healthcare providers, healthcare support workers and emergency and safety personnel. Of course, Brig. Gen. Tony Hale, the commander of Fort Huachuca, received his shot on Tuesday as did other top brass. Getting the vaccine was not mandatory at the installation, but both Lt. Col. Wendy Gray — who is also a nurse practitioner — and Hale are concerned with the “declination rate” on post, which was about 50 percent. Gray and Hale said many of those afraid of getting the vaccine are younger service members who believe it was developed too soon. Hale and Gray hope to spread the word that the Moderna vaccine was not developed overnight and is in fact safe. Gray said she would never ask them to do something she wouldn’t do herself. Along those lines, Fort Huachuca’s Facebook page has a handful of videos with testimonials from various top soldiers at the installation about getting the vaccine. The general, like others who have been inoculated, said his only side effect was a sore arm; he wants to help dispel the fears of those who are doubtful about getting inoculated. It’s not yet clear when the vaccine will be administered for the group that qualifies under Phase 2 at the installation, but Gray said she and her staff will begin preparing.  By the time all three phases are said and done, about 40,000 or more vaccines will have been given out at Fort Huachuca. According to Hale that includes the military, their dependents, civilians and retirees who have benefits through Raymond W. Bliss. For years now, a group of locals has been working to preserve the storefronts on Erie Street in Lowell in memory of a slice of time in 1950s America when window shopping was a favorite Saturday outing. It has become a favorite tourist destination and many have their photos taken by the antique cars and storefronts along the street. Next, a quick announcement brought to you by our sponsors, Sulphur Springs Valley Electric Cooperative. The Public Works Department and the Bisbee Police Department will be looking into relieving some of the parking problems on OK Street in response to a petition signed by 14 residents. The petition requested that the city increase parking spots at the top of the hill just north of 135 OK St. as homes are being bought and others are up for sale. They argue that the influx of new residents will require more parking.  Finally, today we’re remembering the life of James Kenneth Ramsay, a lifetime son of Arizona. He was born in Snowflake, and grew up in Phoenix with his three sisters. There he attended South Mountain High School. In August 1959, he boarded a plane to Brazil to serve as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  Upon his return, James married Sheron Diane Perry and had five children. During the Cold War James enlisted and reported to the Army Language School at Fort Ord, Monterey California, where he learned Russian and was stationed in Germany. Upon his return and honorable discharge, he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Education and Spanish from Arizona State University. Later, he began teaching at Bowie, Arizona and St. David, Arizona High Schools.  James then transferred to Buena High School in Sierra Vista, Arizona as a Spanish Instructor, where he held a multitude of roles in education, athletics, and the community. “Coach” Ramsay led many Buena boys and girls team sports, some of which being track, football, basketball, as well as managing the City Pool and associated lifeguard programs.  Thanks for tuning in to the Herald Review podcast today, join us again on Monday!
