The RNZAF acquired its first 14 Skyhawks in 1970, 10 A-4K and 4 TA-4K trainer variants. In 1984 they purchased 10 ex-RAN Skyhawks which came from the HMAS Melbourne that was decommissioned two years earlier in 1982. Of these 10 Skyhawks, 8 were A-4G variants and the remaining 2 were TA-4G trainers. In 1986 a modernization project for these Skyhawks began named; Project Kahu (the Māori name for the native Swamp Harrier). This project was a complete overhaul of much of the aircraft's systems. These upgrades include a new pulse-Doppler radar, a HUD system, chaff/flare dispenser, radar warning receiver, HOTAS flight controls, a glass cockpit along with numerous other changes to the airframe. The upgrade project also allowed the upgraded A-4K to mount the newest variant of the AIM-9 along with AGM-65 Mavericks and Paveway guided bombs. In 2001 all of the RNZAF's combat squadrons were disbanded with their A-4K's put into storage. While at first these A-4K's were maintained with occasional flights conducted they were eventually covered in a protective latex coating and moved to RNZAF Base Woodbourne for storage. 8 of these Skyhawks were bought by Draken International in 2012, these 8 A-4K's serve in aggressor squadrons in the US with the remaining aircraft donated to museums in Australia and New Zealand. The RNZAF never replaced these retired A-4K's and currently has no combat aircraft in its inventory.
