Michael Laprarie's video: Five Birmingham Babies - Copenhagen 1924

Here is another great recording of the 1924 Charlie Davis/Walter Melrose hit "Copenhagen," allegedly named after the popular chewing tobacco brand. The Five Birmingham Babies was a group made up of personnel from the larger California Ramblers dance orchestra. Probable personnel is Bill Moore, tpt; Bobby Davis, reeds; Adrian Rollini, bass sax; Irving Brodsky, piano; Tommy Felline, banjo, and Stan King, drums. Bass saxophonist Adrian Rollini absolutely steals the show on this tune. Recorded Nov. 10, 1924 in New York. Played back on a Victor Orthophonic Victrola, Model VE 4-4, the "Granada", circa 1926. This model was equipped with the special Orthophonic diaphragm and soundbox that was specifically designed to play back electrically recorded phonograph records. But it also came equipped with an electric motor instead of a spring would mechanism. A medium tone phonograph needle was used for playback, and the Victrola horn was recorded using a Shure SM571 compact dynamic microphone.
