Olivia J Walsh's video: Deep Beneath the Waves 2019

@Deep Beneath the Waves (2019)
My final film for my series for college. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My film works revolve around dreamlike states intensifying feeling and atmosphere. Through a use of shot footage in various marine locations, voice over by Alan Watts and use of a subject, the work shows an often present but fleeting desire to be somewhere else. Deep Below the Waves shows an individual in a place of solitude. The work explores who we can connect/reconnect to the hidden world that surrounds us. The dream scenes within the film depict mood, feelings, motivations and desires. Our own desire to be somewhere else. I want to highlight, how we are a part of this beauty and how certain things stay with us subconsciously and even while we sleep. To fall asleep we must pretend to be asleep. We must be left alone. But it is impossible to force your mind to be silent, like trying to silence the waves of the ocean. Dreams allow the subconscious to be seen. My expression is a reflection of the dream world where we are not controlled by the natural order of sunrise and sunset. I want to show the character in a place where, if he behaves the same way he does on land, he will drown. Why? He must trust himself and the water. It is a matter of faith. It is the matter of life. It can be lovely and terrifying at the same time. A place to go to and escape from. Being underwater is both physical and allegorical for another place, an embodied situation that can lead to psychological discovery. Happy in another world but reality is a breath away. Slaves to breathing. The mind is focussed on the here and now. The important things, the anxiety of the now, not the anxieties of tomorrow. This breath not the next breath. Water lifts you up and holds you down. The pressure pushes air out of your body, effort and instinct keeps it in. - instinct is life and death. Just like a dream, the only way to make any sense of the ocean is the throw oneself into it. My character is part of and in awe of the beauty of his new found world yet he is not a stranger. It looks perfect but he cannot stay. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Email - oliviajwalsh@gmail.com Facebook - Olivia Walsh Photography Other Youtube channel - O J Walsh Films -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Music by: Vincenzo Varvara Percussion: Paul Collins
