Yanomama, are a group of approximately 35,000 indigenous people who live in some 200–250 villages in the Amazon rainforest on the border between Venezuela and Brazil. When a Yanomami dies, the first reaction of his tribesmen is a deep unconstrained anger. Since a there death is not a natural phenomenon, but is caused by an evil spirit which was sent by a shaman of a hostile tribe. Due to this belief there are many holy wars among the tribes. The cadaver is carried out by means of cremation; to bury a corpse would mean to abandon the individual and leave it bound to the slow decomposition of the flesh rather than to liberate it. Family members and friends of the deceased partake in the ceremony. They believe that a soul can only leave the state of limbo if it is cremated, mixed with banana paste, and eaten. Once inside their bodies the soul can be freed. The Dead body must be dispose of as soon as possible, because the soul may come back and haunt the remaining ones. The custom of eating old human ashes might sound unappetizing to most, but to the Yanomami it’s serious business. They are a nomadic people who often go to war with neighboring tribes over space.
