Entre los nuevos tripulantes se encuentra el sobrino del capitán Kirk, Peter, que ha conseguido ser asignado al Enterprise para poder estar cerca de su amigo y amante, el teniente Alex Freeman. Ambos jóvenes formarán parte del equipo de rescate, descubriendo que lo que ha ocurrido en la nave científica es más terrible de lo que nadie hubiera podido imaginar. ----- English: Pursued and damaged by repeated Klingon attacks, the crew of the Enterprise must respond to the distress call from a Federation research ship.
