@California Nurses Protest Staffing Crisis Amid Pandemic
California hospitals have another shortage on their hands: Nurses are in critically short supply at every level. So the state is now allowing hospitals and nursing homes to request an emergency waiver from the California law that strictly limits the number of patients assigned to each nurse. Hundreds of nursing homes and more than 100 hospitals have received the waivers, which expire March 1. It’s the second time since the coronavirus pandemic began that hospitals have been allowed to temporarily exceed those ratios. Gov. Gavin Newsom lifted the caps from March through June, prompting protests from nurses up and down the state.
