Hindus believe Keerimalai Springs to have curative properties, which irrigation studies attribute to high mineral content sourced from underground. It is said this underwater water source also connects to the Nilavarai Bottomless Well which lies over 10 Km away from here. Keerimalai translates into Mongoose Mound in Tamil. It is said that an Indian priest called Nagula Swami (Nagula Muni) bathed in this pond and his mongoose face was cured and turned in to a human one. According to Local folklore a Pandiyan Princess named Maruthapura Veeravalli built the Hindu Kovil at Keerimalai when she was cured of her horse shaped head after bathing at Keerimalai. Keerimalai is 50 feet above sea level, and situated close to KKS. Hindus flock in large numbers on Aadi Amaavaasai Day which falls during the Tamil month of Aadi, to carry out rituals for their forefathers and bathe in the natural springs. Carried out largely by men, “Keerimalai” is particularly famous for this festival. Keerimalai Naguleswaram Temple is located close to this pond which is one of the Pancha Ishwarams of Lord Siva located in Sri Lanka. Even paper cups/plates are harmful and take years to decompose. * Remain quiet and vigilant. Don’t disturb the tranquility of the nature. Respect wildlife and don’t disturb them in anyway. Also be considerate of other trekkers. * Please collect and bring any litter/garbage left behind by other careless travelers. * Don’t light fires unnecessarily and do try to use portable cookers instead of using firewood when camping. If you must, only use firewood on the ground and don’t cut any trees for this. * Don’t bring any plants back with you or cut any trees/branches unnecessarily.. * Don’t use soap/ shampoo when bathing in natural streams as they contaminate them and kill wildlife. * Don’t do anything that harms the Mother Nature.
