Today we’ll be taking a look at Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds united and how the Argentine manager has established them as a good Premier League side. ► SUBSCRIBE to STATMAN DAVE: http://bit.ly/StatmanDaveYoutube We’ve seen a trend in recent years with teams getting promoted from the Championship and performing well in their first season in the top flight. Last season, Sheffield United finished 9th, the season before that, Wolves finished in 7th place and even the season before that, Newcastle United finished in 10th position. All those teams sat deep, looking to be defensively solid before counter attacking - a sound strategy. But this season Leeds United are on for a similar top half finish, the difference being they definitely don’t sit deep and play traditional, counter attacking football. it’s important to understand Bielsa’s principles of play. We took a more in depth look last season, and that video will be linked above, but in short: Biesla’s teams are usually based around a 3-3-1-3, with them either starting in that shape or transitioning from another formation into Bielsa’s 3-3-1-3 when they’ve got possession. El Loco is a huge fan of man to man pressing and his sides adopt an extremely aggressive variant, with Bielsa keeping just a single spare or safety player in central defence. ► CHECK US OUT ON TWITCH: http://bit.ly/SMDTwitch So when facing a single striker like in a 4-3-3, Bielsa will adopt a back four so his centre backs outnumber the striker whilst when facing two strikers, the Argentine will use a back three, again outnumbering the forwards. As you can imagine, Bielsa has imprinted these principles onto his Leeds United side, but given the preference for single striker systems in the modern game, we’ve mostly seen Leeds setup in a 4-1-4-1. They’re quite literally the most aggressive pressers in the Premier League, with only Wolfsburg (56.4) making more pressures per 90 across Europe’s Top 5 Leagues this season (51.9). ► JOIN PATREON: https://bit.ly/StatmanPatreon If Leeds can’t regain possession through their counter press they drop into their man to man duties, but they constantly apply pressure to their opponents. Because of this pressing style, Leeds’ defensive block largely depends on the opposition’s shape as Leeds match them up. If they’re facing two defensive midfielders, say in a 4-2-3-1, Leeds’ central midfielders will push up and their shape will resemble a 4-1-4-1. Whilst if they’re facing just one, like in a 4-3-3, Leeds’ shape looks more like a 4-4-1-1. What do you think of Marcelo Bielsa’s football at Leeds Utd?
