Did you know that drinking is apart of a culture of active service men? According to American Addiction Centers: "more than 5% of military personnel across all branches are heavy drinkers – those who consume 5 or more drinks on 1 occasion, 5 or more days in a month.3 Binge drinking is a serious concern, 1 in 3 active duty service members are binge drinkers,3 which tends to be more common among military personnel with high combat exposure." INTRODUCTION: "Will I be impacted by my alcoholic father?" is a recent question I got from a 22 year old female struggling with over 11 years of her father's alcohol abuse. She made it clear to me that she wasn't trying to shame him or "get him in trouble" for driving drunk and making poor decisions. She explained that she was only trying to understand what he has done to her over the years. She began to see within herself personality traits and emotional challenges that concerned her. She began to realize that his behaviors weren't just his own. She realized his behaviors were hers to manage as well which led to a deep depression at the beginning of this year. In this video, I will be discussing the traumatic impact of living with and trying to live life around an individual who has concerning substance abuse behaviors. Although this video makes reference to alcohol this video can apply to illicit and prescription drugs as well.
