Emotional trauma can truly impact your mind, brain, and body. It is a complete "system attack" in which your daily battle may feel like too much to bear sometimes. What makes trauma worse is what we call co-occurring or co-morbid illnesses. A co-occurring disorder would be something like schizophrenia or psychosis (hallucinations and delusional thinking) with alcohol or substance abuse. A co-morbid diagnosis would be something like schizophrenia or psychosis and post-traumatic stress disorder. When any mental illness comes with alcohol or substance abuse or another kind of mental illness like bipolar disorder things get more complicated. If these things are present within a complex family system it can be difficult to heal.
