Pedestrians and cyclists in Brussels braved fierce winds on Monday (October 28) as a powerful storm lashed Britain, Belgium, France and the Netherlands with winds of more than 150 kmph (90 mph). The storm which battered southern England and Wales on Monday morning shifted to mainland Europe in early afternoon forcing the closure of roads, parks and uprooting trees over along canals in Amsterdam. Belgium is expecting some more damaging winds of upto 110 kmph (70 mph) which are set to diminish by Monday evening, according to local weather forecasts. "Walking in and out is quite difficult," Brussels resident Ferid Belhaj said when asked what difficulties he faced as he headed to work. Minor damage was also caused in France and cross-Channel ferry services were disrupted. "We took the ferry yesterday and it was...like we thought we were going to die because it was so rocky, the waves. It's crazy, the storm," said Laura Taylor. The winds caused some delays at Brussels Airport, where only one out of three runways was operational, but no flights were cancelled, an airport spokesman said. Belgian railway operator SNCB reported some delays because of trees which had fallen onto the tracks. Several parks across the country, such as the Brussels' Bois de la Cambre, remained closed to visitors and the Brussels southern highway was closed due to the threat of road signs falling down. A woman was killed and two people were seriously hurt by falling trees in the Dutch capital and a ferry carrying 1,000 people from the English city of Newcastle was unable to dock in the port of IJmuiden and returned to sea, RTL television said. Fifty flights at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport were cancelled and Rotterdam Port, Europe's busiest, said incoming and outgoing vessels were delayed.
