"Go All the Way" was written by Eric Carmen and is the opening track off of the Raspberries self-titled debut LP released in 1972. The album peaked at No. 51 on the Billboard chart and carried a scratch and sniff sticker scented with a soft fruit perfume. "Go All the Way" hit the No. 5 spot on those same US charts. "Go All the Way" is a song is about a girl trying to convince a guy to do just that...go all the way, meaning to have sex with her. The ballad was inspired by The Rolling Stones song "Let's Spend the Night Together". Because of its sexually suggestive lyrics, considered risqué for the day, the song was banned by the BBC. The opening lines hit that suggestion right from the start..."I never knew how complete love could be,Til she kissed me and said,Baby,please, go all the way,It feels so right (feels so right),Being with you here tonight,Please, go all the way,Just hold me close (hold me close),Don't ever let me go". "Go All the Way" travels along that path until that chorus concludes with the energetic stanza suggestive of some sort of sexual climax..."And she says,(Come on) Come on,(Come on) Come on,(Come on) Come on,(Come on),I need ya (come on),I love ya (come on),I need ya (come on),Oh, oh, baby". "Go All the Way" was an early example of Power Pop. That is to say it was the kind of song with radio-friendly hooks. The title of the song was inspired by a book Carmen came across by Dan Wakefield called Going All The Way. In another note, when the group was trying to think of a name, one of the four members of the band a suggested the phrase, "Aw, Raspberries" (an old "Our Gang" line). They had their name.
