"I've Gotta Get a Message to You" was written by Barry Gibb along with his twin brothers Robin and Maurice and is the sixth track off of The Bee Gees 1968 release...Idea. The LP was the groups fifth album and also featured "I Started a Joke". "I've Gotta Get a Message to You" was their second No. 1 single in the UK and their first US Top 10 hit. "I've Gotta Get a Message to You" tells the story of a man who's awaiting his execution with only hours left to live. The condemned prisoner is pleading with the prison chaplain to pass a final message of love on to his wife. Robin Gibb, who wrote the lyrics, said that the man's crime was the murder of his wife's lover, though the lyrics do not explicitly allude to the identity of the victim. An indication that this isn't exactly a traditional love ballad are found in the lines..."But you ain't got a dime, there's no time for the phone", "One more hour and my life will be through", and "Well I did it to him, now it's my turn to die". The story here, I believe, is hidden to most of us. But simply put, "I've Gotta Get a Message to You" is about a prisoner on Death Row who only has a few hours to live. He wants the prison chaplain to pass on a final message to his wife. There's a certain urgency about it. And it's this urgency where the message of the power of love can be found. A typical staple in most Bee Gees ballads.
