He was most recently booed by fans each time he touched the ball in United’s pre-season friendly against Crystal Palace in Australia, and it of course isn’t the first time that supporters have loudly made their displeasure known. Back in March, news of him being substituted off in the dying embers of a Champions League knock-out defeat to Atletico Madrid was greeted with a chorus of aggressive cheers at Old Trafford, a stadium where such behaviour is traditionally frowned upon. And it’s not just followers of United – two weeks later, he was roundly booed by England fans at Wembley. But what has led to the centre-back becoming such a figure of hate among fans? And beyond the flat-out abuse, is the level of criticism he receives justified?
