travelguruTV's video: Gran Canaria

@Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria was one of the very first destinations to offer a tourism product as we know it today. In 1851 the capital, Las Palmas was declared a tax free region which naturally attracted wealthy Europeans but especially the British, craving a more temperate climate. Many settled in the city and their influence can still be seen in the architecture and garden design. The tourist boom in the 70s led to major development on the beaches of the south coast and mass market resorts like Playa del Ingles remain as popular as ever. In between the beaches and Las Palmas though, the volcanic interior remains largely untouched and , in fact, 46% of the island is protected as a Biosphere Reserve.
