Viral memes of 2021: The year in a recap

A lot went north and south in 2021, making it one of the most happening years of the decade. And no, it’s not only Corona variants that were the buzzwords; but a lot more people who managed to crack a million smiles across the globe.

Let’s have a recap at all those moments, where the world felt a lot better and every worry ceased its existence for a while.

  1. Pawri ho rahi hai

Who doesn’t remember the ‘PAWRI’ trend where everybody was giving a sneak peak at, “ye hum hai, ye humari car hai, aur ye hamari pawri ho rahi hai!”

One of the longest serving memes on the internet, and safe to say a great trendsetter at the beginning of the year 2021.

  1. Shwetaaaaa

Remember the zoom interaction where everybody was trying to remind Shweta that she’s not on mute? And god knows what happened to Pandit!

Jokes apart, Shweta reminded everyone on the globe the ‘importance of the mute button,’ especially when you are on a work call. And yeah, it did generate quite a buzz within the netizens. All brands hopped on to disseminate the message of ‘ssshhhhhh..’

  1. Priyanka Chopra Jonas

Don’t know who’s idea it was to dress her up in that dress, but netizens had a great time. And our queen slayed it like always!

  1. Excuse me, brother, brother idhar!! - Akash Gupta

Yes we all are now aware of the struggles at Sarojini Nagar market. Akash Gupta in his recent stand up show, made sure you are prepared the next time you go shopping at SN.

And yes, we made a meme out of it too!

  1. Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram down!!

Have lost track of how many times the glitches happened this year. But, every single time we had a good laugh.

And twitter laughed harder! (IYKYK)

  1. We made own meme template

No really we did. A holi post wrestling led to this meme template. And we are so proud of how good it turned out. (sic)

And don’t worry, our boss didn’t really mind the fun game of approvals.

  1. COVID

Covid really made a trend out of itself on the internet. With every new restriction and variant, memes made sure to be there too!

  1. CBSE board exams

While every second day they kept getting postponed, the uncertainty and frustration was evident in memes that were all over the social media.

It wasn’t just us who wanted the clear output, but lakhs of students as well who were impatient about their future.

  1. IPL 2021

Where there is IPL, there is RCB in memes! And that's the fact.

But this year, RCB gave a tough competition to its peers. And no wonder they won millions of hearts!

  1. Jal lijiye - Vivah

Makers of the classic movie ‘VIVAH,’ would never have thought in their wildest dreams that their movie scene would grow up to become a meme decades later.

A gentle reminder to drink 8-10 glasses of water daily. This meme is proof that things go viral at their own pace.

Memes are a great way of expressing your thoughts on a certain topic, be it sports or politics. And above are some great examples of how fast social media moves forward. This might not be the best year of your life, but with these laughs by your sides, it was at least a good one. And a great teacher.

This is not it. Many more memes made their way up on this list. Some made us laugh, while some left us wondering - but none disappointed. Stay tuned for part II.
