Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

Craft DIY isn't just a hobby and an activity people do for leisure, it is also a sustainable practice along with one which is cost effective. Several accounts on Instagram, YouTube and Pinterest have come up that regularly offer Craft DIY ideas through videos to reduce, reuse and recycle everyday items.

As humans have evolved and become more advanced with time, the waste we generate in our day to day lives has also grown significantly. We have got into the habit of throwing away things on a whim.

Humans generate 1.50 lakh metric tonne of waste everyday in India. This waste is rapidly causing climate change which is affecting our ecosystems and our health.

Out of this a significant amount of waste can be recycled or upcycled.

Consumerism is one of main reasons for this wastage, buying things impulsively even when we don't necessarily need them this alone is leading to increased pollution, exploitation of workers, increased land use and deforestation.

What could be the best practical solution?

To be sustainable or to live as a foe of the environment is the dilemma of the time. Living frugally might not be the newest trend; people have been recycling and reusing materials for years. But the surface has been scratched, millennials have entered the arena.

Craft DIY, especially, has always been popular. It is one of the most fun ways of being environmentally friendly and sustainable. As said, the most sustainable item is what you already own.

And if, the concoction of a few cents and creativity can remodel old things into new, your bank account will be the most grateful. So, while you’re reducing the pressure on the ecosystem by reusing what you already own, you’re also escaping the rabbit hole of capitalism and frequent purchases. A win win situation.

Many everyday items can be recycled or reused which means creating something new from used or unwanted materials.

A few fun Craft DIY ideas to upcycle or reuse things include:

1)Turning plastic bottles and old tyres into planters to add a hint of green to your living spaces. These bottles can be decorated as per one's creativity.

2)Empty jars can be used as candleholders, vases and more.

3)Clothes can be easily recycled with some work, using modern accessories, tie and some amount of dye. Old denims and tops can also be upcycled, using just scissors and turning them into crop tops or ripped jeans.

4) A couple of old T-shirts can also be used for making quilts and bed sheets through patch work.

5) For people who are good with tools, old ladders can be turned into bookshelves, old glass bottles can be turned into hanging lights, old furniture can be upcycled by simply using some paint and a little bit of effort.

6) Most of our kitchen waste can be reused through composting which is a simple process and can be turned into manure for plants.

7) Old papers can be used to make handmade paper by turning into mulch and can be turned into diaries and notebooks by punching holes in them and binding them together using threads.

8) E-waste can easily be recycled or reused. For example, turning old CDs as wall hanging or coasters by decorating them, old keyboard keys can be used as stands for paperclips and toothbrushes.

While recycling and reusing is always a good idea, the way to lead a more environmentally conscious life is to start thinking about our purchasing habits and not buy things unnecessarily.

We also need to look up places near are neighborhoods that recycle plastic, paper and electronic waste ethically.

Craft DIY is a personal experience that not just turns old items into new things but also helps one use their creativity. Many people find it calming. It is also an activity that reduces our incessant need for buying more things and fashioning new ones using our creativity and a few household items.

The above mentioned are just a few ideas with which one can reuse, recycle and reduce.
