TO INFLUENCE OR NOT TO INFLUENCE

TO INFLUENCE OR NOT TO INFLUENCE

TO INFLUENCE OR NOT TO INFLUENCE

The phrase, “the times, they are ‘a changin’” has aged well, but then again a phrase like this one always would.

I say this in regard to the gradual onslaught of everything digital and online, in the last decade or so.

The digital and the online have made their way into every industry there is, and quite prominently, into a marketing tool. Unless one is living under a rock, the word influencer crosses at least one-thirds of conversations we have these days. To cater to under the rock dwellers, however, I will explain what an influencer is.

An influencer is an individual on one or multiple social media platforms with a considerable amount of followers, so they can almost “influence” these followers into buying something, or watching something, and so on. The quip on the word influence is pretty fun if nothing else.

Influencers are also known to create original content of their own and for brands that sponsor them for exposure.

The internet is a powerful marketing tool in itself, more so when there are individuals who find unique and fun strategies to push brands and products. Once an influencer builds up an audience with integrity, they do become a goldmine for a product, as well as concept placements.

In recent times, we also find influencers being socially aware and promoting mental health, body positivity, sustainability, and so on.

Social media figures, through a balance of personal and business, tend to strike a chord with the masses, the masses that live digitally- and become household names. This personal touch always adds to the authenticity of their word when it comes to whatever it is that they are promoting.

The aesthetics and the potpourri of words like lifestyle, well-being, beauty, etc., paint a pretty picture, along with the content that these individuals create, which can also be quite entertaining and hashtag relatable.

Giants like Vogue and Cosmo host events centered around influencers which provide traction to both sides. It is ingenious and organic, two things that keep the wheel rolling.

Prominent influencers like Kusha Kapila, Mallika Dua, Dolly Singh, Srishti Dixit, etc., have reclaimed the internet as a creative space, being used for more than just memes and, well, memes. That reminds me, memes can also be a pretty cool marketing tool.

In conclusion, some bandwagons are important to be jumped on because more often than not, the results can be lucrative.
