December 4 1872, off the Portuguese coast: The Mary Celeste is yawing out of control in open water. A passing crew boards it and finds it deserted - the crew has vanished. On the tables are warm mugs of tea and half eaten breakfasts. The ship shows no damage - there was no distress signal. Useful items such as boots remain as does the entire cargo of alcohol. Only the lifeboat is missing. The Mary Celeste’s experienced vanished into thin air. Or did they? There were no steaming mugs of tea or half eaten meals - the Mary Celeste was a mess and drenched throughout. The abandoned ship had been through days of bad storms. Nine barrels of alcohol were later found to be empty. They were made from porous red oak and leaked into the hold. Fearing an explosion, the crew took to the lifeboat. They used a long rope to tie it to main ship intending to reboard when the flammable alcohol fumes had cleared. The tow rope snapped and the crew was lost at sea. Plausible?
