'' I Can't Breathe '' - when officers moved to arrest Eric Garner on suspicion of selling "loosies" (single cigarettes) from packs without tax stamps, Mr.Garner pulled his arms away from officer Daniel Pantaleo. Pantaleo then put his arm around Mr.Garner's neck and pulled him down onto the ground. After Pantaleo removed his arm from Mr.Garner's neck, he pushed his head into the ground while four officers moved to restrain him. Mr. Garner repeated "I can't breathe" eleven times while lying face down on the sidewalk. After Garner lost consciousness, he remained lying on the sidewalk for seven minutes while the officers waited for an ambulance to arrive.The officers and EMTs did not perform CPR on Garner at the scene. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital approximately one hour later. The medical examiner ruled Garner's death a homicide. On December 3, 2014, a grand jury decided not to indict officer Pantaleo. The event has stirred public protests with charges of police brutality, compounded by many other recent police incidents involving excessive force & shootings.
