Launched in October 1967, it was one of the most comprehensive Bluebird ranges in body styles: a two-door sedan (added in June 1968), a four-door sedan, a five-door station wagon, and a two-door coupé (added in November 1968). This range became famous for Nissan's rallying successes outside Japan and paved the way for greater Nissan sales internationally. America's Road and Track magazine even rated the Bluebird 510 as 'one of the hundred most important cars of the 20th Century'. The SSS in this instance stands for Super Sport Sedan. The Datsun Bluebird 1600 SSS (510) came with a tuned, twin carb, 1.6 litre engine producing 109 hp. It competed in a number of races in the US, while rallying in the Australian Rally Championship as well. One of its biggest successes was winning the East African Safari Rally, where this very car on display was driven by German-born Kenyan rally driver Edgar Herrmann, along with his co-driver Hans Schüller.
