@Pittsburgh Penguins beat writer Jason Mackey: Recaps Pittsburgh’s historic run
The quality of being great, distinguished, or eminent. Is indeed greatness personified and is an accurate description of the run of the NHL’S repeat champion. The Pittsburgh Penguins can etch their names in the record books becoming the first team to repeat in the-salary-cap-era and the first since Detroit in 1997-98 using the mantra “Why not us” to fuel this improbable run to capture their fifth Stanley Cup title in franchise history. Pittsburgh overcame an assortment of injuries and adversity starting with the loss of one of the NHL’s best defensemen in Kris Letang and the loss of starting goaltender Matt Murray before the playoffs began. With that being said resiliency can be utilized as a hallmark to describe this bunch who used every challenge as a new opportunity to excel. The Penguins also have the luxury of having a battle tested leader to lead them behind the bench. Mike Sullivan became the second coach in NHL history to win back-to-back Stanley Cups in his first two seasons with a team. Toe Blake was the only other coach to do it, in 1957. Game 6 came down to the wire. Patric Hornqvist smacked the rebound of a Justin Schultz shot off Pekka Rinne’s elbow at 18:25 of the third period. How did fans react to the events which transpired and about the craziness of what happened on the ice in Game 6? With every championship team comes changes the year proceeding the year they capture it all. With this as a backdrop, what changes to this stellar roster should we expect in the offseason? Jason Mackey Penguins beat writer for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette gave 2Man Advantage Podcasts Kevin McShan the inside scoop on how this historic run reached the ultimate climax.
