@Detroit Lions Post Draft Aftermath With: Michael Stets
Bob Quinn adopted the old analogy that speed kills in the NFL draft, and used it as his guiding principle throughout the duration of the entire process back in April. Florida speedster Jarrad Davis has been handpicked by Quinn to help provide some much-needed playmaking ability in the middle of Detroit’s defense. The Detroit Lions lacked difference makers in the second level of their defense therefore in addition to Davis, Quinn also wrangled Jalen Reeves-Maybin out of Knoxville Tennessee hoping he’d can provide some speed and play making ability in the Lions revamped linebacker crops. At the very least provide some depth and versatility on special teams as well. Detroit wasn’t done addressing their defense in the draft with six of their nine selections going to address that side of the ball. Teez Tabor, CB, Florida provides some interesting competition to free agent pickup D.J. Hayden for the starting spot opposite Darius Slay. However, his lack of straight line and recovery speed is a concern. Something the Lions are hoping is masked by his instincts and ball hawking ability. Detroit also used the draft to round out their roster at wide receiver, defensive end and even quarterback. This draft can best be defined for Detroit by saying it wasn’t flashy but Quinn was able to select some solid lunch pail guys who will fight to provide depth and competition all throughout the roster. Outside of the draft of course the Lions are focused on the future of their franchise quarterback Matthew Stafford. Entering the final year of his contract, the Lions seem determined to ink him to a long-term deal. Providing them some stability at the most important position of all of sports. The good news is their seems to be an urgency on both sides of the equation to get something done. Secondarily however, equally as important is nursing Ziggy Ansah back to full strength to ensure the Lions pass rush returns to form. One of the interesting position battles which will play out during training camp is who will line up next to him this season? The Lions were also notorious for dropped passes a season ago, and with Anquan Boldin not expected back with the team who will be catching passes on a consistent basis from Stafford this year? Also, can the Lions rejuvenate their running game with the additions of T.J. Lang and Rick Wagner? Can any of their running back stay healthy, productive and on the field? There are certainly plenty of post-draft headlines to dive into with the Lions. To help you get updated on everything happening in Allen Park this offseason Michael "Stets" Steczkowski Studio Host (Detroit Lions Countdown to Kickoff) at WJR 760 AM spent Thursday afternoon on the 2Man Advantage Podcast, with Kevin McShan giving all of us the lowdown.
