@As the Youngest head coach in College Football: Is Lincoln Riley ready to lead Oklahoma?
Bob Stoops dedicated nearly two decades of his life to the University of Oklahoaama as their football coach. However, his coaching life span has now reached its expiration date, as he’s decided to start the next chapter of his life. Keeping his promise that he wouldn’t let coaching defeat him physically or mentally. As the folks in Norman Oklahoma bid Stoops a fond farewell and thank him for his years of service, they are now left with an unproven yet coveted commodity in Lincoln Riley. Who also happens to be the youngest head coach in college football at the ripe old age of 33. Riley will make his head coaching debut for the Sooners at 33 years old on Sept. 2 against UTEP -- just three days before his birthday -- making him the youngest head coach in the top division of college football. He said the promotion is a dream. "When you decide you want to do this, these are things you just dream about,” Riley told reporters in Norman, Okla. "I feel like I'm honestly living a dream right now." One of the reasons Riley got his dream job was because he symbolizes stability for one of the banner programs in all of college football. With Riley getting the top job, it allows for a seamless transition and the current schematic systems to remain in place. The athletic administration laid the groundwork for Riley’s ascension a year ago. Earlier this offseason, Riley signed a contract extension through 2019, raising his salary to $1.3 million per year -- making him the third highest-paid assistant coach in the country and the first OU assistant to pass the $1 million mark. The extension was largely seen as an effort to keep Riley at Oklahoma as Stoops' successor, although no one knew his promotion would come this soon. Is he ready to assume the top mantle as the leader of this program? What does the future hold for the Sooners under his leadership? Is Riley ready to fulfill some lofty expectations? Ryan Aber Oklahoma Sooners beat writer for The Oklahoman and NewsOK.com. joined 2Man Advantage Podcasts Kevin McShan on Friday, to discuss Riley’s rise to the top spot the legacy of Bob Stoops and more.
