2ndviolinist's video: Lane Goldsmith 3 more songs his mother taught him

@Lane Goldsmith – 3 more songs his mother taught him
Recorded in the middle to late 90s on his wonderful mahogany Gibson. 1. There’s More Pretty Girls Than One 2. I Wouldn’t Marry an Old Man 2:48 3. Little Black Mustache 4:12 I have known Lane since I met him (late 60s). At home, he would be ensconced in his easy chair either reading a book or listening to an Astros game on the radio. If it happened to be on TV he would turn the sound down and still listen to it on the radio. Before a Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner he would be outside smoking a turkey or some other meat. His turkeys were the only ones I ever liked. He was a newspaperman most of his working life, the last 23 years at the Houston Chronicle. He learned folk songs from his mother and many other sources. Lane became more and more interested in them and when he was established in Houston he and others started the Houston Folklore Society. He was president several times. When I went to it, people would sit in a circle and play a tune or two or just listen. The Folklore Society was active and, as far as I know, may still be going. When he retired, he wanted to travel, most of the time with family. Being fortunate enough to be married to his 2nd daughter, Laura (Jo to us), I was able to travel to a good chunk of Europe, England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, New Zealand, Nova Scotia, Northwest US & Southwest Canada, Belize, Cozumel, and more. Lane and his wife went to Chile to see a complete sun eclipse with worse luck than we had going to Missouri to see the latest eclipse. For us, it was overcast with some breaks in the clouds. Where they went it was completely socked in. But visiting the Galapagos Islands on the way back took some of the sting out of it. They also went to Norway with other children. Lane and his wife Lucy were very adventurous in their method of traveling. In Europe and Britain he would would secure lodging for a night or two and from then out we would go to the train station or Visitors Center and get in line to find a bed and breakfast. I would always take my cheaper violin (I played classical & fiddle) which was a good icebreaker. The best place we stayed was with the Davies outside of Llangollen. Their house was on the side of a hill overlooking a beautiful, verdant valley with a small river to the left, the hill rising to the right and the town, with 2 pubs and a chapel, straight ahead at the bottom of the valley. He and his eldest son were house painters. He had grown up in Liverpool at the same time as the Beatles. He played and sang with a lot of those guys when he was younger. He had a 12 string guitar and I had my fiddle. Lane and his daughter, Martha, both played guitar and sang. Mr. Davies got out the scotch and we played until late at night. He said that the next evening we had to go down to the local pub and play. This 500-year-old pub was called The Sun, just a short but steep walk down the hill. We started singing and playing even though no one else was there. Within 20 minutes the place was jampacked. The owner pulled down the shades and we played for quite a while after hours. We stayed with them 2 more times on different trips. The last time they were not in the bed-and-breakfast business anymore but they asked us to stay with them.
