Studied at the Conservatory of Amsterdam with Carl Flesch. 1909-1913: violinist of the Concertgebouw Orchestra 1913-1915: concertmaster of Abo (Finland) 1915-1917: 2nd concertmaster of the Residence Orchestra, The Hague 1917-1949: 1st concertmaster of the Residence Orchestra, The Hague Besides working as a soloist, chamber music player and leader of several chamber orchestras he also conductor of the Hague Dutch West Symphony Orchestra. Swaap formed a duo with the cellist, Charles van Isterdael. This duo was also part of the Hague String Quartet: Sam Swaap, first violin; Adolf Poth, second violin; Jean Devert, viola; Charles van Isterdael, cello. The quartet was founded in 1918 and lasted at least to 1938 with the same personnel. Leon Orthel (1905-1985) dedicated his Capriccio op.19 (1939) to Sam Swaap.
