A real life Rick & Morty adventure. In 3 Summits, we follow a father and son as they struggle not only to scale three mountains, but also mend the broken bond between them. This five-week adventure is full of physical challenges, chilling dangers, and emotional upheavals. With perseverance and naiveté the father-son team set out on a majestic adventure to three of the highest mountains in Europe and North Africa. Visit https://realworldadventures.com/ for more details, maps, facts and and the How-To blog posts. The journey of a lifetime must be conquered one step at a time. 3 summits tells of a father and sons attempt to scale 3 mountains, to bridge the chasms of their relationship after a difficult divorce. Only an idiot would climb something like that. It’s nearly the end of May and it's snowing out here. Three people died here while climbing that mountain. The hut up there is closed. We spotted the trail marker and steel ladder in the distance. but to get there we needed to cross a slick ice flow. But the attached emergency shelter is unlocked and it even has firewood. When the trail disappears under a snowy slippery slope we find our only hope is to use a garden hose that feeds the hut. One false step or if the hose snaps we will have discovered a fast route down the mountain. Seth picks up his pace as he sees the summit over one more rise. To the top of the Grosner Priel. From this last rise we see a narrow rocky ridge line that leads to the summit marker. But we will need to enter those clouds to reach the objective. Now we're at the top of Grosner Priel. But need to get off this exposed outcrop while we have intermittent visibility. Getting to the summit only counts when you've reached it and safely returned. The second target was the 4000m+ Toubkal. In the Atlas Mountains found in very far off North African Morocco. Simply getting to the mountain would be an exhausting task in its own right. The trail grew steeper as we slowly gain altitude. I was paying the price for our quick travel from sea level to the mountain refuge at 3200 meters or 10,500 feet. The normal maximum altitude gain is 1000 meters per day. We had tripled that value and I was paying the price. It was hell sleeping out last night. The wind changed direction and the temperature dropped dramatically. And the lack of sleep compounded my altitude issues. I was weak and miserable. Seth kept pushing me on. The roles were reversing. I was determined not to be left behind. If I quit the guide would turn us back. I had to keep going for Seth's sake. And because Seth had never beaten me and I was stubborn enough to make him work for it. The worse I felt the more his spirit seemed to rise. The boy was seeing his father failing for the first time in his life. He was discovering his strength. As we approach the summit Seth picked up his pace. He was feeling cocky and on top of the world. I on the other hand couldn't stay on my feet. I was whooped. My energy level was zero. Seth had beaten me for the first time in his life. And he was enjoying the moment. I needed to take a nap. The third and final objective was the 3000m plus Mount Olympus in Greece. At this stage Seth seemed determined to get the trek over with. Our route was a clearly defined trail to follow the river upstream. Our objective that day was the mountain refuge. Late in the day the sun began to take its toll. We were both hot, hungry and tired. I wasn't suffering any altitude issues this time but it was still hard going, at least for me. Potentially our last day together if all goes well. Seth was determined to summit, grab his Rail Pass, dump me and Lithahuru, and head back to mainland Europe on his own. We were entering a strange land that was once the home of the gods. It was a fitting place for our final test. The challenge of the 3 summits had grown as we progress through the summer. He could sense the door to his freedom as we got closer to the summit. What had started out as a silly idea many months ago had evolved into a concept and then into a challenge. Over the summer it had caused us to compete, argue, pull apart and ultimately grow closer. It had also taught me to respect Seth's strength and determination and it had shown him that he could beat his father. He was stronger at long last. If we summited he would pass his final initiation test. He would transition from childhood to manhood. 5 weeks and three summits later Seth had accomplished his personal objectives. Clearly he had surpassed his father physically. Seth had morphed into a confident young man. His father hugged him and set him free.
