Recreational marijuana has been legal in Colorado for an entire year. Huzzah! But, it is illegal to use weed in public. And, possession of more than an ounce by nonmedical marijuana patients is a crime -- which means, the consequences of Colorado’s new laws are, to be fair, still unclear. The Drug Policy Alliance reports that the number of people charged with marijuana possession dropped from around 9,000 in 2010 to roughly 1,500 in 2014. They also point to the tens of millions of dollars in increased tax revenues collected by the state, and the statewide decrease in traffic fatalities. "The doomsday vision of those who look to maintain prohibition has not come to fruition," Art Way of the Drug Policy Alliance said. However, those opposed to legalization like Smart Approaches to Marijuana [SAM] point out the number of tokers cited for smoking in public has tripled - from 184 in 2013 to 668 in 2014. And, there has been an increase in accidental marijuana ingestion by kids. "We have 100 kinds of marijuana gummy bears out there but no way to find out what the costs of such a policy are," Kevin Sabet of SAM said in a statement. Oh Snap! It’s true that most people hate Congress, but tokers in our nation’s capital have more reason than most to diss the Federal politicians of the district. In November, a majority of residents in Washington D.C.voted to pass Initiative 71, which would legalize the cultivation, use and transfer of cannabis in D.C. Ironically however, no matter what the people want, the U.S.Constitution grants the U.S. Congress jurisdiction over D.C, which means that any changes to laws on a local level are subject to Congressional approval. The Mayor of Washington D.C, Muriel Bowser told “Meet the Press” that the city government intends to explore every option, including potentially filing a lawsuit in order to prevent Congress from acting against voters. However, the big-pharma pawn and Republican Congressman, Andy Harris has been able to essentially trample all over the will of the people by introducing a measure to prevent the district’s government from spending any local or federal funds to reform marijuana laws. Democracy? Freedom? Nope, not in America’s capital… What do you think? Are the weed laws in Colorado working? Will the citizens of Washington D.C. get the legalization they voted for?
