Filmed in a very crowded barn lies this original surviving Mercury. 1954 brought a significant engineering change in Mercury's first overhead valve V8, a bigger version of the new " Y-block " design used on that year's Ford. Though about the same dimensions, a five main bearing crankshaft and much more power : a raise 161 bhp with standard four barrel carburetor. Teamed with a low 3.9:1 rear axle ratio and standard transmission, it made the '54 a fast car off the line. Equally noteworthy was ball joint front suspension, another development shard with Ford. Styling improved via wraparound taillights and a clean but more aggressive grille with larger bullet guards for a more prominent bumper. There were only two Mercury models this year, the low end Custom and this Monterey. The Monterey came in a hardtop coupe, Sun Valley hardtop coupe, convertible coupe, a four door eight passenger station wagon, and this four door sedan. The highest selling Mercury model this year was the hardtop coupe with 79,533 units sold while this sedan was in second place with 65,995 copies. It had a base price of $ 2,333 and weights in a 3,515 lbs. Again, that Y block V8 engine had 256 cubes with 161 horsepower. Features of this original low mileage Mercury include that new " toothy " grille, excellent preserved interior, those airplane - like controls on the dash, and the big " linconesque " taillights.
