ACTFL Membership's video: ACTFL Melba D Woodruff Award for Exemplary Elementary Foreign Language Program

Established in 2004, this award is given in honor of Melba D. Woodruff, a classroom teacher and outstanding leader in the profession who encouraged her students to do their best, dream their dreams, and work hard to fulfill them. The 2020 recipient is the Anchorage School District (AK), and the award is accepted on behalf of the District by Brandon Locke. “Anchorage School District (ASD) is honored to be named the 2020 recipient of ACTFL’s Melba D. Woodruff Award for Exemplary Elementary Foreign Language Program. ASD has over 30 successful years of immersion programming under its belt, launching its first immersion program in 1989 in Japanese. Since then many other languages have been added to the District’s offerings including Spanish; Russian; German; Mandarin Chinese; Yup’ik—an Alaska Native language; and French. Approximately 4,000 students are enrolled in one of our K-12 DLI programs. Superintendent Dr. Deena Bishop shared: ‘The Anchorage School District is committed to offering students opportunities to promote academic growth and to allow them to be successful in their lives. Today’s world requires citizens with multilingual skills to engage with global partners. Our District’s immersion programs allow students to stretch beyond their native language into biliteracy.
