Sunday, January 24, 2021 Newark, NJ - Firefighters Extinguish Two 2-Alarm Fires Occurring Simultaneously. Both incidents required response from some 180 Firefighters Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose reports that nearly 180 Newark Firefighters extinguished two 2-alarm fires that occurred nearly simultaneously in two different locations today. “Our firefighters did an exceptional job in battling both fires in freezing temperatures,” Director Ambrose said. At 1:33 p.m., firefighters responded to a fire at the 518 Springfield Avenue. Firefighters observed fire on all floors of the 3-story, wood frame, commercial building. Fire also extended to a similar structure at 520 Springfield Avenue and a second alarm was sounded. Following the response of some 90 Newark Firefighters, the fire at both buildings was considered under control at 2:42 p.m. No injuries were reported, and four families have been relocated as a result of this incident. Again at 1:42 p.m., firefighters responded to a fire at 135 Sunset Street, a 2-story, wood frame, residential building. Firefighters observed fire on the 1st and 2nd floors. A second alarm was sounded due to fire exposure to buildings on the left and right at 133 and 137 Sunset Street. The fire was considered under control at 2:48 p.m. with the response of 90 Newark Firefighters. No injuries have been reported. A total of 17 people, representing four families, have been relocated. Fire Companies from several nearby towns were called in to the city to cover empty fire stations.
