👀 ROTATING & BENDING When we walk, jog, run, stride, or sprint, the lumbar vertebrae flexes, extends, rotates, and side-bends. Serge Gracovetsky’s ‘Spinal Engine Theory’ ​ hinges on the concept of the coupled motion of the spine — whereby a lateral bend of the spine induces an axial torque driving the pelvis. Rather than this seemingly excessive movement — that might play out in side to side bending, for example — we should understand this as the specific strategy the sprinter uses. And just like some sprinters are great force producers, but not very stiff on contact, some sprinters have great spinal engines — like Usain Bolt, for example.
