Basically, it gives the user the ability to use nature’s energy to power-up their strength, durability, speed, etc which is basically what a Sage Mode does but it is different from that. When these curse marks were interested we didn’t know much about it and just thought that it amplified the user’s strength somehow. Then we got to know after the introduction of Jugo and how really the genius Orochimaru created these cursed seals. When Orochimaru first discovered Jugo he was fascinated by his ability to use nature energy without any sort of senjutsu training. Thus, Orochimaru wanted to distribute this senjutsu chakra to others as well. So, he started conducting various experiments which obviously killed a lot of humans in the process. It is possible that Orochimaru’s training at Cave Ryuchi helped him to understand Jugo’s Kekkei Genkai and help him in making these cursed marks. Having said so it does seem that it is pretty awesome for the one who gets this mark. As he/she gets free access to nature’s energy and that too without Sage Mode training which most people find too hard to perform. But, do you really think that Orochimaru will give away this sort of powerful ability free of cost? Of course, he has some advantages of giving away all these curse marks. First and the most important advantage that Orochimaru gets due to these curse marks is that he can revive himself via these seals if he dies. As we saw how he was revived by Sasuke Uchiha during the Fourth Great Ninja War. Also, it puts the user of the seal under the control of Orochimaru. Most characters agree to get this seal as they receive a huge powerup, and they tend not to look at the costs that it bears. Now, how can one receive this sort of curse mark? Well, it can only be received when Orochimaru bites a character. Then the markings form around the spot where Orochimaru has bitten the person. When these markings spread over the body it means that the first stage of the mark has been activated. In this stage, user gets some amount of nature energy and when the second stage is activated, the appearance of user changes but the amount of nature energy supply also increases. As we know that there are different types of cursed seals like the seal of heaven and earth, etc. All these provide different amounts of nature energy and change the appearance in a different way. Now, as I said even though it seems very powerful and beneficial for the curse mark bearer at first it has a vast amount of side effects. First and the most dangerous side effect of this seal is the risk that it bears. Only 10% of people are able to survive after getting this curse mark. Meaning 90% death rate. Secondly, even if one character is lucky enough to be in the 10% survivors, in the initial stages the curse mark is very unstable and causes a lot of pain and on top of that, it takes a lot of time for the user to get this seal under his complete control. Most people cannot activate the second stage naturally and thus have to take the mind awakening pills to do so. And the most significant side effect of these pills is death. Also, the excessive use of the cursed seals corrodes the brains and makes it easier for Orochimaru to control the seal user, and if that’s not enough, one has to continuously feed chakra to the seal so that it doesn’t cause pain and thus it drains out the user’s chakra of kara boruto completely at times and thus could again cause death.
