Gateshead Council were named Facility Operator of the Year (0-22 Sites) at the ASA Aquatics Awards 2016. They have worked closely with the ASA to develop and deliver a comprehensive multi-discipline aquatics plan to increase participation across all sections of the community. They now have a range of dedicated initiatives encouraging more people of all ages and backgrounds to swim. Gateshead have a large Learn to Swim programme. Every primary school in Gateshead attends one of five pools to receive their school swimming lesson each week. The council actively work with the ASA to sign schools up to the School Swimming Charter. This year the frequency of the swimming lesson programme has increased by 283 per cent, with the biggest increase seen in adult swimming lessons and foundation stage. The council are also now looking to reintroduce water polo and diving.
