@Precision Machine Spindle Rebuilding - Part 2 Disassembly
How to disassemble a precision machine spindle, we cover the complete disassembly, the tools, the processes and the procedures to disassemble a spindle in a very detailed step by step method. We shared in Precision Machine Spindle Rebuilding Part 1, covering our opening to this series, discussing that nearly all of our spindles had been disassembled to prepare for this spindle rebuilding series. NOTE: We do have one of each spindle Levin has made, continues to make and demonstrate the disassembly process in detail sharing what you might expect to encounter. We will be assembling 4 Levin Spindles starting in the Part 3 as sub-parts. We show what each Levin spindle and their various components look like and do inside each spindle assembly. This is very important insight from or point of view. Spindle disassembling took place off camera before deciding we would be filming these to share. This was decided so we would not have unexpected delays during each spindle disassembly from purchased, machined, reworked, prepped, and painted these disassembled spindles. Basically we did not want to extend the Educational Series for a greater distance of time. Each spindle is shared in relation to the actual Levin & Son spindle in the disassembly demonstration of what to do, expect and be observant of. Complete step by step introduction to Precision Machine Spindle Rebuilding. This is a spindle disassembly demonstration, similar to nearly every precision machine spindle type using ball bearings, regardless of the manufacturer. We are demonstrating showing 1 spindle each, 4 in total from only a single manufacturer Levin & Son. TOPICS COVERED - PART 2 00:00:17 - SECTION 0 INTRODUCTION HELPFUL WARNING: Be sure to watch Part 1 of 5 where we introduced you to Precision Machine Spindle Rebuilding, that part was presented in very fine detail and it will be a great help before proceeding here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUkET3CxF4U 00:02:57 - Section 1 REMOVING THE BELT PULLEY We show the belt pulley removal in a Levin Accessory Spindle, show how to remove both an open headstock pulley and a closed headstock pulley as well. 00:06:20 - Section 2 REMOVING THE BEARING CAPS Also referred to as Dust Shields. We share some additional tools, store bought, homemade quality Allen wrenches, specifics for each style of Levin & Son spindle, including the cautious removal of bearing nuts dust covers and the felt rings as these are all very soft materials, we cover how to disassemble an accessory, closed headstock and an open headstock spindle. 00:18:40 - Section 3 REMOVING THE SPINDLE NUT We share spindle nut removal for each spindle type Levin makes, we demonstrate the tougher of the 4 types, the smallest one, and the accessory spindle. Discuss does and don’ts for both the open headstock and closed headstock. Discuss if your spindle nut is tough to remove, there are a few solutions to try. We go over even more additional tools not mentioned in Part 1 of 5. We cover the Levin specialty bearing nut, what it is, how it works and how to use it. 00:32:07 - Section 4 PRESSING THE SPINDLE OUT Number one goal here is to protect the actual spindle, do not apply to many hydraulic pounds of force here, this is an important lesson, use of a hydraulic press, a bearing separator, maybe some Delrin and a careful attentive set up will be needed to protect the spindle. 00:42:32 - Section 5 PRELIMINARY PARTS REVIEW Before cleaning the now, fully disassembled spindle you need to investigate each component, study them, see if there are wear or other unusual issues that may need to be addressed. 00:47:50 - Section 6 REMOVING THE FELT RINGS As mentioned, felt rings are no longer purchasable from Levin & Son as they have been discontinued. You at least need to clean them, if you do not clean them you will need to make new felt rings before proceeding. NOTE: We will have a link here to share how to properly and safely clean your pressed wool felts. (Patrick future link here) 00:53:45 - Section 7 FINAL THOUGHTS We share some experiences, discoveries we have come across performing these procedures of Precision Machine Spindle Rebuilding. We share a bit more of the Spindle bearing locking nut mechanism this is unique for some spindles including the Levin & Son Accessory Spindle. Then there are some Active Atom insider tips and techniques provided by Levin & Son to us.
