The Burning Engines!!! On some departures due to high power, you can see red glow as if the plane engines are on fire. The glow is from the last stage turbine disc only visible from behind the engine under right lighting conditions. Commercial jets use high-ratio-bypass turbo-fans. The majority of the discharge flux is plain old atmospheric air driven by a huge and very powerful fan through an annular ducted cowling on the engine. That discharge is blown out of the cowl at speeds of a bit more than 500 mph.
