Is it possible to build muscle without a dedicated bulking phase? Absolutely, whether you're a beginner or not. This is because the number one factor behind muscle growth is progressive overload, not just how much you're eating. If you’re able to do one more rep than last time, lift slightly heavier weights, or improve your technique—like better mind-muscle connection or more controlled **time under tension**—then muscle growth is inevitable. It *will* happen. On the other hand, even if you’re in a bulking phase eating 500-1000 calories above maintenance, but you’re not applying progressive overload—maybe due to a lack of mental effort—then muscle growth won’t occur. If you can mentally push yourself during those 60 minutes of training, you can build muscle even at maintenance calories or in a slight deficit. The key is to ensure sufficient protein intake and proper recovery in all cases. Also, choose your exercises and training volume wisely.
