Dr. Alduan Tartt's video: How Tell If Someone You re Dating Is A Narcissist

@How Tell If Someone You're Dating Is A Narcissist
If you are in a relationship with someone with extreme narcissistic traits, I have one word of advice. “RUN”. Psychologists can work with a lot of couples to solve marital issues EXCEPT ones where one partner has a diagnosis of Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Here is a brief definition of Narcissistic personality disorder — one of several types of personality disorders — is a mental condition in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for excessive attention and admiration, troubled relationships, and a lack of empathy for others. I even went to a training to see if I could increase my success rate with working with couples where narcissism was a major issue but all the trainers said the same thing: “There is little hope”. They all laughed and said this was their least favorite client too. I was so relieved! I thought I was the only one. Why? Think about it...how can a healthy relationship exist when one partner is a full blown narcissist? Just based on the nature of the diagnosis (inability to show empathy),narcissism collides with everything you need to be in a healthy relationship (love, willingness to compromise, kindness, selflessness, accountability, ability to care about your spouse’s feelings equally, etc.). AND... Someone who struggles with narcissistic personality disorder has supreme difficulty accepting the fact that they need help, have a problem, and will blame you (therapist) or their spouse before they change. They will lecture you on needing to cut expenses & you can catch them (on camera) leaving the refrigerator open. You nicely remind them to close it next time. They will flip it on you and remind you who pays the energy bill & accuse you of being too critical 😂. Listen, I only advocate for HEALTHY relationships which should not be confused with “perfect” ones. There are no perfect marriages but plenty of healthy ones where spouses learn to make “perfect adjustments” for one another for a happier marriage for both. I will NEVER advise a spouse to stay in a toxic marriage. Either you remove the toxin (change) or you run. Otherwise, your soul dies & the kids watch. That is NOT a Godly marriage.
