Today we are going to be looking at the daunting but exciting prospect of buying your first property! It has become increasingly difficult over the years for young people to get onto the property ladder, for number of reasons. Some would say most significantly due to the fact that the average house price in the UK has skyrocketed and the property market as done exceedingly well, whilst graduate first jobs salaries and average wages have not increased in the same fashion. In some cases they have even declined, making the gap even larger for people make it onto the property ladder. There are a number of government schemes out there designed to try and make it a bit easier for young people and first time buyers to get onto the property, for example the Help to buy isa (which is now closed for new applicants), starter homes scheme (enables you to save money if buying a new build), london help to buy isa (for those living in greater london, looking for a property valued up to £600,000) and my personal favourite, the lifetime isa or LISA. The Lifetime ISA lets you receive a government grant every single year at a rate of 25% of what ever amount you put in, with your maximum deposit being £4,000. So essentially you can get up to £1,000 for free from the government ever single year if you add the maximum amount. I will run through exactly how the LISA it works, and outline both the positive and negative features. We will also be looking at the benefits of owning property, compared to renting, as a long term strategy to achieve financial independence. Hopefully this will clear up some confusion there may be as to how the property market works, and empower some of you to start saving, improving your credit scores and get ready to get onto the property ladder.
